This summer, while many were posting snapshots of more renowned European hotspots, a different destination was quietly capturing the hearts of North American travelers: the Azores. This stunning archipelago, comprised of nine volcanic islands 850 miles off the coast of Portugal, saw an astonishing 203% increase in flights from North America in July 2024. Ponta Delgada, the bustling capital of São Miguel—the largest island—emerged as a surprising favorite among vacationers.

São Miguel’s allure lies in its idyllic climate and serene landscapes, providing a perfect retreat from Europe’s summer heat. With direct flights from major U.S. cities like Newark, Boston, and Toronto, the Azores now feels more accessible than ever, often being closer than many mainland European destinations. Once there, visitors can indulge in a range of activities: whale watching, relaxing in geothermal hot springs, canyoning on Pico Island, or surfing on stunning black sand beaches. The dramatic scenery, featuring cliffs plunging into the Atlantic and roads lined with blooming hydrangeas, is a feast for the eyes.

The rise in popularity of the Azores has been gradual but significant. In 2023, the region welcomed 1.2 million hotel guests, marking a 14.8% increase from the previous year. Revenue from accommodations reached a record $175 million, with a continued surge in tourism through 2024, as more travelers discover chic, eco-friendly lodgings. Travel experts note a marked shift in interest. “Travelers previously overlooked the Azores,” says a boutique travel advisor. “Now, it’s often their top choice, with many incorporating a stop in Lisbon on their way.” São Miguel offers diverse landscapes within its compact 9-mile width, from historical towns and geothermal pools to lush forests and black sand beaches, all easily accessible in a short drive.

Accommodations have evolved from quaint villas to luxurious stays, with a range of options. Visitors can enjoy modern amenities and breathtaking views, such as those at new upscale resorts that blend comfort with natural beauty. As more Americans discover this enchanting archipelago, the Azores are set to emerge from the shadows and become a sought-after European destination for years to come.
